About Us

Our Story

A family, a hill, and a vision for authentic Tanzanian hospitality

THE PLACE

Why Butiama?

Butiama is a place that most travellers pass through without stopping. We think that is a mistake.

The rocky hills that frame our lodge are home to birds, monkeys, mongooses, and tortoises. Ancient rock paintings trace the story of people who lived here long before any of us. Our pool bar and restaurant are built directly around a massive natural rock formation — a feature that sets the tone for everything we do: working with this land, not against it.

Beyond the natural beauty, Butiama carries enormous historical weight. It is the birthplace and final resting place of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere — the Father of Tanzania. This connection to the country’s founding story runs through every part of life here.

Add to that the cool highlands, dry weather, proximity to the western Serengeti — far less crowded than the main gates — the living culture of the Zanaki people, and even legends of treasures hidden by German explorers in the 19th century. Butiama rewards those who are curious enough to stop.

THE LODGE

About the Lodge

Mwitongo Lodge opened in July 2017. It sits on beautifully maintained gardens, with an outdoor swimming pool, a rock bar, and 14 comfortable rooms.

We are not a large chain hotel. We are a place where the owners know your name, the food is cooked fresh every day, and the quiet is real. Every detail matters to us because this is our home, and we treat every guest as though it is theirs too.

We accept guests 365 days a year and serve breakfast daily from 6:30am to 10:00am. Our restaurant and bar are open throughout the day.

MEET THE HOSTS

Mwitongo Lodge is run by Neema and Calogero. Neema is Tanzanian; Calogero is Italian. Together, they have lived across Europe and travelled widely through Africa, Europe, and Asia before settling in Tanzania in 2016 to transform what was once a tired family facility into what you see today.

They built this lodge by hand — with care, patience, and a genuine love for hosting. They pay attention to every detail not because they have to, but because they want your experience here to be one you carry with you long after you leave.

When you stay at Mwitongo, you are a guest in their home.

Come and See for Yourself
